Last night Ned invited us over for BURGERS! He works for the produce distributor Goodness Greeness and one of the vendors he works with, Roseland Organic Farms, gifted him several pounds of meat; ground beef, porterhouse steak, NY strip steak, pork sausage, pork brats, and probably some other stuff. So he defrosted some ground beef just in time for our arrival.
Ned braved the cold and fired up the propane grill while we ate an appetizer of sauteed Brussels sprouts, pickled garlic scapes, and cured black olives. the salad of tender mixed greens (baby kale, tatsoi, etc.) and flowers (violet and calendula petals), reminding davis of his Wild's Edge days... was also enjoyed before the burgers finally made it to our plates. The burgers were stuffed with shallots and davis and i had ours medium-rare. we put them between store-bought sourdough slices which had been toasted in a buttered pan, topped them off with goat cheeses, mustard and ketchup. I kind of wished we had some more adventurous toppings but I didn't really care... all I cared about was the meat (duh), which was delicious. davis added to his burger some pickled onion from a finished jar of spicy pickled beets. He thought the patties could have benefited from more fat and a touch of salt.
After eating, my cousin Ben came over and we had tea and drew some exquisite corpse. Soon the dudes were all playing guitars and ned's uke while I listened and drew some more, here and here.
Ned sent home with us a small jar of sea veggie kraut! What a great host! Davis and I rode home in the snow very slowly around midnight. All in all a great night with people I love and awesome food.
